Every adult in Texas is a mandated reporter.
If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 911 right now.
How to Report Child Abuse in Texas:
Child protection starts with your action. In Texas, anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect is required by law to report it. You don’t need proof—just a reasonable suspicion. Your report could save a child’s life.
Call the Texas Abuse Hotline:
1-800-252-5400 (24/7, confidential, statewide)
Or Report Online (Non-Emergency):
Submit a secure report any time through the official website.
What You’ll Need to Know
If possible, come prepared with:
- Child’s name, age, and address (if known)
- Suspected abuser’s name and relationship (if known)
- Details about what you’ve seen, heard, or suspect
- Where the child can be found (home, school, etc.)
It’s okay if you don’t have all the details—just provide as much as you can.
Mandated Reporting in Texas:
By law, everyone must report suspected abuse. Professionals (teachers, doctors, counselors, etc.) must report within 48 hours. Failing to report can have legal consequences. Don’t wait—better safe than sorry.
Identity Protected:
Texas law protects anyone who reports in good faith from civil or criminal liability. Your identity is confidential and will not be shared with the accused.
What Happens Next:
A trained hotline caseworker will ask questions to understand the situation. If the report meets criteria, an investigator from CPS or law enforcement will be assigned. You likely won’t receive updates due to privacy laws, but every report is reviewed and taken seriously.
What Is CACCT’s Role?
After a report is made, CPS or law enforcement may refer the child and family to CACCT for interviews, support, and care. If you have general questions about the process—not to make a report—call CACCT for guidance.
